Social Action

Naomi AbelsonNaomi Abelson is the Social Action Specialist available to support to Reform congregations seeking guidance in all areas of social action – from finding meaningful volunteer work to building local coalitions, advocating for pressing social justice issues to reinvigorating your congregation's social action agenda. Naomi has worked for both the Union for Reform Judaism and Religious Action Center (RAC) for almost four years, previously holding the position of Manager of Congregational Relations for the Commission on Social Action.

  • Connecting synagogues to the RAC and Just Congregations (our Movement's congregation-based community organizing campaign)
  • Connecting synagogues to others within our Movement actively engaged in successful social justice initiatives with replicable models
  • Development of user-friendly social justice programming, including:
    • Holiday Guides
    • Advocacy Issue Guides (e.g. Environment, Darfur, Hunger)
    • Updates to the RAC's Social Action Program Bank

Naomi also coordinates Movement-wide initiatives including Haiti Disaster Relief, the Nothing But Nets anti-malaria campaign, Irving J. Fain Social Action Awards and more.

She is passionate about service learning, community organizing, building inclusive communities, engaging young adults in congregational life, serving small congregations and believes strongly in the importance of evaluation and assessment. Prior to coming to the Union, she earned a double Masters in Jewish Communal Service from Hebrew Union College and Public Administration from the University of Southern California.
