Applauding Israeli Prime Minister Olmert and Palestinian President Abbas’
Continued Commitment to Peace

April 13, 2007- I welcome today’s reports that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert have agreed to talk every two weeks. Such communications are indispensable in moving toward a resolution to the ongoing dispute, and mediating conflicts between their governments. This important agreement acknowledges that the road to peace is indeed a process, requiring ongoing talks and negotiations. Such communications may be the key to the creation of a lasting peace.

We also commend Secretary Rice for her proposal which brought about the plan for these bi-weekly. Her leadership and commitment to a peace plan for the region is an essential ingredient in bringing a peaceful two-state solution to fruition.

This Shabbat, as every Shabbat, as every day, Jews will pray for the peace of Jerusalem. We do so, this week, with a renewed sense of optimism and hope.
