UAHC President Eric H. Yoffie today praised the United States government for its role in bringing forth an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and urged that it continue to play a vital role in the peace process.
The full text of Rabbi Yoffie's statement is as follows:
"The agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority is an important milestone on the road to lasting peace among the governments of the Middle East and the inhabitants of the lands they serve.
"We want to thank President Clinton and his envoy Dennis Ross for their leadership in bringing Israel and the Palestinian Authority to an agreement on Hebron. As the leaders of the largest Jewish body in North America, we are grateful for their tireless efforts to bring peace to the region and for their willingness to continue to play a major role in the months ahead as this process moves forward, as specified in the agreements.
"We commend Prime Minister Netanyahu and PA Chairman Arafat for understanding that peace requires mutual respect based open communications. We are confident that Prime Minister Netanyahu and PA Chairman Arafat will scrupulously respect the terms of the this agreement and that they will refrain from any steps that would create obstacles to peace."
