On the Death of King Hussein

ON THE DEATH OF KING HUSSEIN
Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie
President, UAHC

February 7, 1999

Our tradition teaches us that when great leaders die, we are all to mourn their death as if they were a member of our immediate family. The death of King Hussein today is a loss not only for the people of Jordan, who have so cherished his leadership, and not only for the Arab world, which has benefited so much from his statesmanship, but also for Israel and for Jews around the world. We, too, feel the loss, and we, too, mourn for this man of peace.

We extend our most heartfelt sympathies to the Royal Family and to the people of Jordan. We pray that King Hussein?s dreams of peace and friendship for all those in the Middle East may be made real by those who now carry on his legacy.

May his memory be a blessing, and his life an inspiration.
