Reform Movement Condemns London Bombing

Yoffie: In this moment, let people of all nationalities and religious faiths join together against violence and terror.

New York, July 7, 2005 – In response to today’s string of terrorist bombings in London, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

“Today the world was shocked by the news of multiple bombings in London, England. The Reform Jewish Movement stands together with the people of England as they mourn the death of their fellow citizens. This senseless terror represents a threat to peace and stability throughout the world. In this moment, let people of all nationalities and religious faiths join together against violence and terror as we unequivocally declare our commitment to a safe and peaceful world.

“Peace will only be reached when we learn to see past our differences and recognize the humanity inherent in every individual regardless of race, religion, or nationality. These terrorists, who pollute and distort the peaceful messages of religion, will only unite members of all religious faith traditions in common opposition to hate and violence. Let us pray together, and hasten the day when all nations shall beat their swords into plowshares and end the senseless terror that plagues our world.”

The Union for Reform Judaism (formerly the Union of American Hebrew Congregations) is the central body of Reform Judaism in North America, uniting 1.5 million Reform Jews in more than 900 synagogues. Union services include camps, music and book publishing, outreach to unaffiliated and intermarried Jews, educational programs, and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, DC.
