NEW YORK, August 1, 2011 In response to the use of increased violence against civilians by the military forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
We are deeply disturbed by the reports of force used by President Assad against his people in recent days. We unequivocally condemn his actions, and we admire the courage and fortitude of the Syrian people as they battle violence and repression and struggle to take the future of their country into their own hands.
We welcome President Obama's pledge today to increase pressure on the Syrian government and to isolate the Assad regime, and we call on both the Administration and the United Nations to take swift action in support of the Syrian people.
