URJ President Calls MK Rotem's Remarks About Reform Movement 'Unacceptable' and Calls for Rotem's Removal from Knesset

Contact : Annette Powers

New York, NY, February 5, 2014 – At a meeting in the Knesset yesterday, MK David Rotem of Likud-Beiteinu, who is the head of the Knesset Committee on Constitution, Law and Justice, said that the Reform Movement "is not Jewish... they are another religion." In response, URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs issued the following statement:

"It is simply unacceptable that a Knesset member who is part of the governing party and holds this legislative position would make this statement. We call on the Speaker of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein to remove MK Rotem from this position immediately. There is no way that someone who holds these views--and has consistently stated them in public--can be a fair arbiter over laws that impact the very essence of Klal Yisrael."

It is depressing to hear that any "leader of Israel" makes such statements. From the perspective of a Reform Jew in America, I am delighted and I demand that that a response is made immediately.

A question that comes to mind is whether I should continue to make contributions to Israel or specifically to Reform movements or Congregations in Israel if such comments are not immediately struck down and disavowed by the general leadership in Israel.

I pray for a better future in recognition of REform in Israel.

Relegate this person to the lowest position possible...he does not deserve a seat in the Knesset.
