DOMAIN NAMES FOR UNION CONGREGATIONS
Some congregations, who set up their Web sites within the Union Web, prefer to establish their own, unique domain names rather than use URLs (Web addresses) based on urj.org.
For example, Temple Beth-El in Providence, RI owns account ri003, which is accessible by URL http://ri003.urj.org/. Temple Beth-El subsequently requested the symbolic link bethel, resulting in the URL http://bethel.urj.org/.
However, reaction from members of their board, including some Web users, indicated a more easily remembered URL would be better received. So Temple Beth-El chose instead to seek their own, unique domain name, http://temple-beth-el.org/ to be used with the free Web space made available by the Union.
STEPS to obtain and setup a virtual domain for your congregation:
REGISTER YOUR DOMAIN
To accomplish this, Temple Beth-El must first register the domain name with a domain name registrar of their choice. Here are some authorized registrars:

When you are prompted for DNS Name Servers, please provide the following information to your registrar:

Temple Beth-El retains ownership of their domain name; if they move to another hosting provider, they can take the domain name with them.
CONTACT UNION WEBMASTER
Once Temple Beth-El owns the domain name, they must send a request to webmaster@urj.org (please note that the only person who can make the request is the account owner under a valid email address) and provide the following information:
- your full name and phone number
- account ID (eg. ny001)
- domain name (eg. temple-beth-el.org)
PRICING FOR DOMAIN NAME HOSTING
$50/year for domain name hosting made payable to the Union. Please do not send payment as we will bill you. Also note that this fee is separate from your domain name registration fees (issued from your registrar).
URJ REGISTER AND MANAGE DOMAIN FOR YOU!
If you choose, the Union can register and manage the domain for you. The cost of this is included in the $50/year for the hosting of the domain name.
EMAIL FORWARDING
Once your domain name has been established and functional, you can set up email forwarding using the system's control panel. For example, Temple Beth-El can request an email alias of webmaster@temple-beth-el.org or rabbi@temple-beth-el.org. Since email aliases essentially forward mail (directed to the alias) to another email address, they will need to have a working email address for each and every alias you want to create for your site.
