USING FTP FOR APPLE MACINTOSH USERS

Detailed instructions are provided for two contexts:

These instructions assume that your id is "xx003" and that the home page on your local system is named "index.html".

Using FTP for Mac, with Fetch 3.0 and a standard SLIP or PPP Internet account

Login to the Union using Fetch 3.0

  1. Open Config PPP and Login to your SLIP or PPP Account
  2. Open the Fetch Application and wait for it to connnect (The Default Host is usually "Dartmouth"; just let that connect this time)
  3. Select New Shortcut from the Customize menu
  4. Enter the following information:
    • Name: Union
    • Type: Folder
    • Host: uahc.org
    • User ID: xx003
    • Password: Presumably you know your password
    • Directory: [leave this blank]
  5. Click OK and wait to connect

If you want Union to be your Default Host and be selected automatically when you launch Fetch

  1. Select Preferences from the Customize menu
  2. Select Union from the Default menu under General
  3. Select Raw Data from the Upload menu as the Default non-text fomat

To Upload Web Files to your user account

  1. A scrolling list of your current files will appear in the dialogue box.
  2. Select the appropriate format for transfer (Text for html files, Raw Data for GIFs and Zips)
  3. Click the Put File dialogue box
  4. Select the file you wish to upload.
  5. Click OK and wait for the file to be transferred
Repeat the previous steps to install additional files. To update a file currently stored at the Union simply "Put" a new file with the same name and it will overwrite the previous version.

To disconnect from the server

  1. Click on the Close box in the upper left hand corner of the FTP dialogue box.
  2. Select Quit from the file menu.
  3. Go to your browser and see your handiwork.


Using the web browser software supported by America Online.

Getting started

  1. Connect to your provider: America Online, etc.
  2. Enter Internet Area
  3. Switch to the Browser (or click on the WWW Icon)

Setting up session information

The first time you use Web Browser, you must define some parameters in your "Session Profile."
  1. Choose "Configure" from the Edit Menu
  2. Select "FTP Client"
  3. Click New
  4. Enter a name in the dialog box; e.g., Temple Home Page
  5. Enter the following information:
    • Hostname: uahc.org
    • Username: xx003
    • Password: Presumably you know your password
    • Directory: [leave this blank]
    • Server Type: UNIX
    • Folder For Incoming Files: [not relevant for uploading]
  6. Click the close box to save the information

Logging into the Union

  1. Select FTP from the Services menu
  2. Choose Temple Home Page by holding down the arrow icon at the right
  3. Click Connect
  4. Wait for the dialog box to appear and for the cursor to return from the watch icon to the arrow. If your system just hangs for a moment, check the services menu again. If the FTP selection is now gray, just wait a bit; your Browser is waiting to connect to the Union.

To copy a file to your FTP directory at the Union

  1. Click Image, if you are uploading a graphic file, ASCII if you are uploading a text file, or Auto if you are uploading a Zip file
  2. Pull Down the FTP Menu However, there is no harm (only a slight loss of efficiency) if you send all your files in Auto mode.
  3. Select Put...
  4. Highlight the file (or files) you wish to upload
    Multiple files may be compressed using ZipIt before transfer
  5. Click Open

To install a file in your Web directory

  1. Pull Down the FTP Menu
  2. Select Quote Command...
  3. To install a single file, index.html, enter the command string:
    site exec hmove xx003/index.html reform/uahc/congs/xx/xx003
  4. To install a .zip file, myweb.zip, enter the command string:
    site exec hunpack xx003/myweb.zip reform/uahc/congs/xx/xx003
  5. Click OK
    You will see a series of messages at the bottom indicating the installation has taken place.

Note: The use of .zip files and hunpack creates all necessary Web subdirectories and is the only way to create a Web subdirectory at the Union.

To delete the file from your FTP directory

  1. Highlight its name and click Remove

To exit from FTP

  1. Click the Close box in the upper left hand corner of the FTP dialogue box. At the bottom of the screen you will see the Union signoff with "Goodbye"
