Lech Lecha to a Place of Hope
The Million Quarter Project

November 11-12, 2005
9-10 Cheshvan 5766

17,000 Jews remain in Ethiopia, facing hunger and poverty every day. It costs only 25 cents to provide dinner for an entire family. CAN YOU SPARE A QUARTER?

Join Reform congregations around the world as we dedicate Shabbat Lech Lecha to the Ethiopian Jews who are still waiting for the chance to make aliyah.  On this Shabbat, Reform Jews worldwide will participate in a special tzedakah project called Shalom Ethiopia: The Million Quarter Project to provide nutritious meals for hungry Jews living in Ethiopia.

The funds collected for the Million Quarters Project will support the meals provided by the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ), including the “bag of beans” program, which provides pregnant and nursing women with a bag of beans large enough to feed their family for the evening meal.  For many Ethiopian Jews, the beans provided through this program comprise their only meal of the day.  Each bag costs only 25 cents.

At this modest cost, your congregation, alone, could make a difference in the lives of hundreds of Ethiopian Jews.  Together with Reform congregations all across the globe, we can reach our ultimate goal: One Million Quarters, One Million Meals.

The Commission on Social Action's work on international issues is supported by a generous contribution from Marilyn Herst Karsten to the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism.
