Youth Engagement at URJ Biennial


As someone committed to engaging the next generation, you will have the opportunity to meet with the staff of our youth programs, participate in workshops and intensives, and partake in experiences that will focus on our work together to deepen, expand and connect these engagement opportunities to the work you are doing in your congregation.
Learning Opportunities

Learning Sessions

  • Explore a wide range of topics dozens learning sessions relating to Jewish education and youth engagement led by experts in the field: inclusion, Israel engagement, early childhood education, big data, college outreach, camp-congregational partnerships, mentorship and more. See the list!


  • On Friday, December 13, from 2:15-3:45 pm, leaders of the Campaign for Youth Engagement will share details of the new youth engagement strategy and be available for consultation in the Biennial Kikar

Intensive: New Kids on the Block – Youth Engagement in the 21st Century

  • Wednesday, December 11, 1:00-4:45 pm
  • This in-depth training and learning course is designed to give you tangible takeaways and an opportunity to enrich your personal skills and knowledge.
  • We will explore the pressing questions of our time: How are young people blazing paths in the world? What tools and techniques are necessary in a more youth-centered culture? With teens searching for answers beyond the synagogue, how will the role of the youth practitioner change and how will it remain constant? Is the concept of youth ministry one that can be successfully adapted to the Reform Movement?
  • Join Movement leaders, URJ staff, and leading youth engagement visionaries for an in-depth exploration of critical topics, strategies and ideas as we lay the foundation for the next generation of Reform Jewish youth.
Networking Opportunities
  • Lunch with the URJ Youth Engagement Staff – networking “brown bag lunch” with the URJ youth staff, Thursday December 12, 12:15 pm
  • Consultations with URJ Youth Engagement staff – schedule a meeting with staff
  • URJ Youth Programs Alumni Reception at the Biennial Music Festival – Thursday December 12 in the Gaslamp District (Old Spaghetti Factory) - 9:45 pm
Kikar and Resource Road
  • Celebrate the fun and life-changing impact of Reform youth programs in the Kikar and the Reform Resource Road.
  • Join us in the Kikar Biennial for: science demos led by 6 Points SciTech Academy; drop-in dialogue about successful models of congregational youth engagement, and more! 
  • Celebrate NFTY at 75 – Join hundreds of NFTY Alumni to kick off NFTY’s 75th birthday celebration, beginning at the Biennial and culminating at NFTY Convention 2015
  • NFTY Teens at Biennial – a new teen experience at the Biennial, including a home-host option (lowering barriers for more teens to participate), time out in San Diego, teen-only programming and participation with the larger event
B'nai Mitzvah Revolution
  • The headline-grabbing B’nai Mitzvah Revolution will convene in San Diego for intensive learning, building upon the momentum already generated by the 90 participating congregations. Lessons learned in the first year will be shared in learning sessions throughout the Biennial and poster sessions in the new Biennial Kikar.
  • "T'fillah and the Pre-Teen" The BMR will host an experiential learning session about t’fillah for early adolescents – what should it look and feel like? How might young teens engage with meaningful t’fillah? The session will take place on Thursday, December 12 from 3:30-5:00 pm.
