Youth Director

Position summary

Temple Bat Yahm of Newport Beach, CA seeks a full-time Youth Director to create and oversee programming for TBY youth in grades 1-12.  The function is to foster social, spiritual, educational, and social action programming for TBY youth.  All youth programming activities should enable students to develop and deepen their connections to Reform Judaism, other Jewish youth, Temple Bat Yahm, the local community, and Israel.  The Youth Director will represent TBY at regional and national conferences and training seminars, approved in advance by the Education Committee and Board of Trustees of TBY. 

Professional Requirements and Skills

  • Knowledge of Reform Judaism including prayers, rituals, and holidays
  • Strong organizational, project management, and leadership skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with youth of all ages through high school
  • Knowledge of child development
  • Computer experience including word processing, database, and social media applications


General Programming Duties

  • Plan and implement programming for children in grades 1 through 12 that fit into a plan of educational, social, and social action goals for the year
  • Junior youth programming for 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th grades youth groups
  • Attend all youth group events
  • Arrange or oversee food and arrangement of program transportation, if required
  • Coordinate with the Director of Education to integrate Youth and JCAL Religious School activities appropriately. 
  • Establish TBY NFTY chapter for 6th-8th grades and 9th-12th grades.
  • Create and supervise TBY Youth Board of students, including regular meetings, to assist and participate in planning of events
  • Promote youth participation with TBY-TVT students and attend NFTY Regional events. 
  • Prepare and manage the annual youth budget including youth scholarship allocation and administration
  • Serve as staff liaison for TBY’s Education Committee
  • Plan and organize the annual Purim carnival with volunteers staffing activities
  • Attend appropriate staff meetings to coordinate with other TBY programming
  • Potential for grant writing to assist youth program in fundraising
  • Operate youth snack bar during school hours, which generates funds for TBY youth activities


Administrative Dutes

  • Organize permission forms and applications for events
  • Perform accounting and bookkeeping procedures with TBY bookkeeper for receipts and expenses related to youth group financial records
  • Establish scholarship system for local/regional events
  • Attend Senior Staff meetings
  • Complete all NFTY-related paperwork and recordkeeping
  • Address discipline issues


Educational Responsibilities

  • Teach the 7th Grade Bnei Mitzvah Discovery Class consisting of social action and educational components
  • Participate in teaching and leading special events for 8th-9th grade class
  • Create Youth Leadership Corps for 6th-12 grade students
  • Under supervision of the Director of Education, develop programs for post-Bnei Mitzvah class instruction, curriculum writing, and Shabbaton programming


Communication Duties

  • Co-author a youth group mission statement
  • Create and send out flyers for events and regional activities
  • Develop social media contact, publicity, and communications
  • Make and return phone calls/emails to TBY students and parents
  • Maintain contact with other community and national advisors and Youth Directors
  • Prepare youth section of TBY print publications such as Scribe
  • Create general publicity materials for TBY web site and e-newsletters


General Advising Duties

  • Act as role model for all youth
  • Flexibility in hours and functions to accommodate scheduling
  • Maintain positive attitude to motivate and empower students
  • Display knowledge and understanding of youth culture
  • Maintain highest level of health, safety, and welfare for TBY community
  • Counsel youth on Jewish concerns and questions
