Rabbi Ron Klotz, Camp Director, Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI)
Debbie Friedman wasn't the first cosmic Jewish force I'd encountered, but she certainly had the longest lasting and the deepest impact of any.
I
came under her spell in 1973
when she was Chalutzim songleader at Olin-Sang-Ruby and I was unit
head. Yes, I was the leader and she "worked" for me, but it didn't
always work out that way. In any event, we had a great partnership,
Chalutzim basked in the early Friedman music and the
number of positive, Jewish, emotion-packed moments that summer were too
numerous to count.
We
were all Debbie's children; even those of us who were older than she
and supposedly in higher positions. Turns out there was no higher
position.
