Cantor Kathy Barr, Temple Shalom, Succasunna, NJ

I first met Debbie in the early 90's, where she was part of a workshop in Spirituality at a Cantors Assembly convention. She spoke about reaching the (then) 77% of Jews that were unafilliated. She wanted to write music that would speak to them. Some of the chazzanim in the audence snickered. She nevertheless continued, and then she sang her V'Sham'ru (the one on her "Blessings" CD. You could hear a pin drop. Those chazzanim "got" it. A sweet voice of Israel has been silenced, but her music will live on through all of us. We will miss her deeply.
