FAQ
How much money should I bring with me? - In terms of spending money, snacks, meals on your own, etc. a reasonable minimum would be $100. You will be able to exchange your money for Shekels after you arrive at the airport.
How far ahead of time should I get a passport? - As soon as possible.
What do we have to do to extend our stay at the hotel after the trip is over? - An extended stay can be arranged through the staff at Beit Shmuel.
What should we do about cell phones while we’re in Israel? - Israel Phones, if you would like an order form, please contact Natalie Seltzer at nseltzer@urj.org.
Is there an exercise facility at Beit Shmuel? - No there isn’t, but you will be getting a fair amount of exercise hiking around Israel.
What access will we have to the internet while staying at Beit Shmuel? - The Center is wireless and there is also a computer room that you can use.
Can we bring our own electric products (hairdryer, alarm clock, etc)? - The outlets are different in Israel than they are in the United States and Canada, and because of that you will need to buy an outlet adapter. I believe that you can buy one at any travel store.
What kind of clothing should we bring? - Mostly informal. Bathing gear, sunscreen and a warm wrap for the evening; especially while in the desert which could still be cool at night. You probably will not need an umbrella or rain gear. Comfortable walking shoes. It’s usually best to layer your clothing. There are laundry facilities available at Beit Shmuel, you can leave the bag of laundry at the front desk with some money (I’m not sure of the cost) and that the bag will be picked up by the laundry service and returned the same day.
Emergency Contact Numbers at Beit Shmuel for family members? - The World Union for Progressive Judaism Office: 972-2-620-3447 - If calling from within Israel, one should drop the country code of 972 and add a zero before the rest of the numbers.
