Rabbi Daniel Freelander serves as senior vice president of the Union for Reform Judaism and coordinates all of the Union’s infrastructure and operations. A Union staff member since 1975, he has also served as coordinator of the Union’s formal and informal Jewish education, including Union camps, youth programs, early childhood and adult learning. He also supervised the work of URJ Books and Music, served as executive editor of Reform Judaism magazine, as North American director of Program, as associate director of NFTY, and for ten years as regional director of the Union’s New Jersey-West Hudson Valley Council.
Freelander lectures widely on trends in Jewish worship and music, and was, for many years, the guiding force behind the programming of the Union’s North American Biennial Conventions. A gifted musician, Freelander has composed, recorded and performed popular Jewish melodies with Cantor Jeffrey Klepper, including the well known "Shalom Rav."
Rabbi Freelander lives in Ridgewood, NJ, with his wife, Rabbi Elyse Frishman of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Franklin Lakes, NJ; editor of the new Reform Prayer Book Mishkan T'filah.
