Jewish Family Concerns

Disability Awareness | LGBTI | AIDS Awareness | Adoption

The Jewish family represents a wide range of realities. Increasingly, our congregations are including alternative models of family structure, thus becoming a "unity of diversity." This major trend is dealt with in a variety of ways within the Union family. Departments such as Synagogue Management and Outreach work to develop models and programs dealing with synagogue governance issues, interfaith issues, and more. Jewish Family Concerns continues to work with these departments in addition to looking at specific issues that impact the lives of our families and our congregations.

Alternative family systems include the greater inclusion of physically and mentally disabled persons, interfaith families, LGBTI Jews, and families with adopted children. New demographic realities have seen increases in adoption within our communities.

The Diversity and Inclusion programs are focused on evolving the synagogue structure to meet the needs of all members of the congregation. The central theme around which these programs are designed are:

  1. Accessibility
  2. Acceptance
  3. Accommodation
  4. Inclusion
