May 25, 2011 - Everything Synagogue Leaders Need to Know about Clergy Contracts - Part I
Ensuring that clergy contracts reflect both the covenantal partnership between congregations and their clergy and the legal requirements of an employment agreement are important components of the sacred relationships between rabbis and congregations.
In this webinar, we will discuss best practices regarding the process for arriving at a contract that pleases all parties. Participants will gain insight into the clergy contract process from
trusted advisers to rabbis and from the perspective of congregational
leaders.
This webinar is jointly sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism (Union) and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR).
Rabbi Steven Fox
Moderator: Rabbi Steven Fox, Chief Executive of the CCAR.
Panelists: Michael Gan, a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Peer, Gan & Gisler, grew up in a rabbinic family, has advised rabbis in contract negotiations and has also been an active congregational lay leader
Carl Silverman, has his own law firm in Baltimore, MD, is a URJ Board Member, a past president of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, has represented the congregation, among others, in various clergy contractual matters, and has assisted other congregational presidents in rabbinic contract negotiations. Laurie Sobelman is the immediate Past President of Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles, CA, a URJ Board member, serves on the synagogue's personnel committee and has been involved in contract conversations with each member of the synagogue's clergy.
A second webinar on this topic will be scheduled for Fall 2011. It will continue the conversation begun in this webinar, and provide additional perspectives on the clergy contract process.
