About Rabbi Laura Novak Winer
Rabbi Laura Novak Winer, RJE is a Youth Specialist who can provide support to congregations seeking guidance in many areas of youth programming, including retaining and engaging post b'nai mitzvah youth in congregational life, building youth committees, and addressing teen issues in the congregation, especially with regards to adolescent relationships and sexuality.
Laura has been with the Union for Reform Judaism since 2000, working in a variety of capacities related to youth. With a plethora of titles over the years, Laura's primary responsibilities were to support Regional Educators and Regional Directors of Youth Programs who worked in the Union regional offices, support NFTY and work on North American level projects of the Youth Programs Department, most prominently the Union's Sacred Choices project. She has many years of experience working with teens and bringing innovations to teen programming, both in the synagogue and outside of it.
Prior to joining the Union, she worked as the Director of Education at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, CA, directed the Contra Costa Midrasha in Walnut Creek, CA and has 20 plus years of involvement with Camp Swig and Camp Newman. Rabbi Winer was ordained in 1995 at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. She holds a Masters in Jewish Education from the Rhea Hirsch School of Education at HUC in Los Angeles, and a BA in Religious Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Rabbi Winer serves as a vice president of the board of the National Association of Temple Educators. Rabbi Winer also serves as the president of the Board of Directors of the Tri-Valley Haven for Women in Livermore, CA. She is married to Rabbi Rick Winer, of Congregation Beth Emek in Pleasanton, CA. Together they have two sons, Saul and Max.
