Coming Home

By Becki Brenner

I envy you, you people of Israel, you with
the tongue that does not stumble on the Kaddish, your history that is entwined in your hearts,
your community that is both open and closed.

I am that Person - there -
The one who is a stranger, who bends instead of bows, whose tongue stumbles, whose
prayers are whispers, whose song is silent.

I am that person - there -
The one who is learning, the one who is questioning, the one who is reaching out to God,
the one whose heart is open.

Welcome me, sons and daughters of Abraham and Sarah, for I am home.
