65th UAHC BIENNIAL CONVENTION

For all registered participants who arrive early, we are pleased to offer an exciting array of preconvention programs. Registration is required for all of the following:STUDY KALLAH Change is a part of life. Explore how Jewish texts illuminate, model, and guide personal change. Dr. William Cutter, professor of Education and Hebrew Literature, HUC-JIR, Los Angeles, and Dr. Sue Levi Elwell, associate director of the UAHC Pennsylvania Council, will teach texts related to Change in Our Jewish Lives. This program, cosponsored by the UAHC Department of Adult Jewish Growth and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, begins at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 14, and concludes at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 15, 1999. There is an additional fee of $75 for participants, and Tuesday evening dinner is included.
SOCIAL ACTION TRAINING PROGRAM For the first time, the Religious Action Center and Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism will sponsor a training program facilitated by Heather Booth, president of the Midwest Academy. This program is designed to teach congregational Social Action chairs and other synagogue activists how to maximize the role their congregations can play in organizing their local communities and working together to make a difference. This program takes place from 2:00 P.M.-5:30 P.M. and 7:30 P.M.-10:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 14, 1999 and continues on Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. to 12 noon. There is an additional fee of $10 for this program. CREATING LEARNING CONGREGATIONS: THE UAHC SYNAGOGUE TRANSFORMATION PROJECT Synagogue teams of lay leaders and professionals are invited to participate in a program for that concentrates on the theories and practice of synagogue change. Team members will participate in special pre- and postconvention sessions and follow a schedule of workshops and consultations during the Biennial. Designed to help you assess your temple's readiness for change and clarify congregational visions and goals, this program will enable you to determine the appropriate steps for moving your synagogue toward spiritual and organizational growth. The program begins on Wednesday, December 15, at 9:00 A.M. and concludes at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 19. Space is limited. Interested congregations should call (212) 650-4238 for an application.
INTENSIVE HEBREW COURSE If you haven't learned Hebrew before, here's your chance! Spend seven hours learning basic Hebrew reading skills and key vocabulary that will help you deepen your understanding of Jewish prayers and rituals. This class is scheduled for Tuesday, December 14, from 2:00-5:00 P.M. and 7:30-9:30 P.M. and Wednesday from 9:00-11:00 A.M. There is an additional materials fee of $25, and attendance at all three sessions is required.
THE BIENNIAL CHOIR If you are a singer, don't pass up this opportunity to participate with more than 100 people from throughout North America. The choir will be conducted by Cantor Mikhail Manevich (Washington Hebrew Congregation). Choir rehearsal times are Tuesday from 3:00-5:30 P.M. and 7:00-9:30 P.M., Wednesday from 9:00 A.M.-12 noon and from 5:15 P.M.-6:30 P.M., Friday from 1:30 P.M.-3:30 P.M., and Saturday from 8:30 A.M.-9:45 A.M. (final rehearsal before service) and from 3:00 P.M.-3:45 P.M. (dress rehearsal for concert). The choir will participate in Saturday morning services and perform in a late afternoon Shabbat concert. HOW TO FIGURE YOUR MUM DUES USING THE NEW SYSTEM The new UAHC Proportional Dues Program that was instituted in 1998-99 differs considerably from the system that has been used for the past twenty-five years. Learn how the system works and how to accurately compute your congregation's movement-support obligations on Wednesday, December 15, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.
INNOVATION IN ACTION Learn how Disney's Magic Kingdom creates an environment that consistently anticipates its visitors' needs and fulfills their dreams. Disney staff members will share management techniques that synagogue leaders can apply to congregational life. Explore Disney's Magic Kingdom from underground and backstage on Wednesday, December 15, from 9:00 A.M. to 12 noon. There is an additional fee of $85 for this program.
