Public Relations Manager, RAC

The Religious Action Center (RAC) seeks a Public Relations Manager to join the Communications Department in Washington, DC. The Public Relations Manager will help the RAC craft its message, tell its story, and reach a variety of key audiences across a variety of channels. This position requires discretion, sound strategic judgement, flexibility, grace under pressure, a sense of humor, and the ability to think creatively. The ideal candidate will be able to both work collaboratively as part of a tightly knit team and work independently to see projects through to completion.

The RAC is the central hub of Jewish social justice in North America. For more than 50 years, the RAC has been at the center of the struggle for civil rights and represented the Reform Movement – the largest Jewish denomination in North America, including 900 congregations, 2,000 rabbis, and 1.5 million people – on advocacy and legislative matters in Washington, DC. Now, the RAC is leading Movement-wide social justice organizing and advocacy campaigns and building up new state and local capacity.

The Public Relations Manager will report to the Communications Director and be responsible for coordinating social media and email newsletters, editing the RAC’s blog, and communicating with members of the press. The Public Relations Manager will frequently collaborate with all members of the RAC staff including both D.C.-based staff and those working across the U.S., as well as Reform Movement leaders and activists, coalition partners, and others across North America. The ability to brief and prepare leaders and activists – both on staff and in the field – for speaking and interview opportunities, is vital.

This is a terrific position for someone who wishes to grow in a creative and aggressive communications operation that is part of a fast-paced and growing Jewish social justice movement.

Reporting to the Communications Director of the Religious Action Center, the Public Relations Manager’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with members of the media and help create and execute strategies for telling the RAC’s story in public and advancing the RAC’s goals. Create compelling media pitches and coordinate press release distributions.
  • Manage the RAC’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and Instagram, in collaboration with other members of the RAC and Reform Movement Communications teams.
  • Work with state-level and Movement-wide campaign teams and coalition partners to create scalable and measurable communications campaigns that meet the RAC’s organizing and advocacy goals at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Create and edit top-notch written materials.
  • Work with Communications team colleagues to establish and advance the RAC’s message, brand, and reputation.
  • Monitor media and identify real-time rapid response opportunities.
  • Serve as the main editor of the RAC blog, working closely with members of the RAC staff and Reform Movement to curate content.
  • Develop effective and measurable strategies around distribution and placement of op-eds, blog posts, press releases, videos, images, etc.
  • Provide communications training and support to other staff and internal and external partners across the Reform Movement.

  • You have experience working in some combination of journalism, politics, government, advocacy, public relations, marketing, or at another Jewish organization.
  • You have a voracious appetite for reading, watching, and listening to the news.
  • You are motivated by the pursuit of justice and the Reform Movement’s pursuit of a more compassionate and whole world.

Preferred qualifications and attributes:
