One of the challenges faced by adolescents displaced by Katrina has been that as schools have been scrambling to provide core courses to the influx of students, they have not been able to meet the broader needs of students. Youth in hurricane-affected areas are already demonstrating the expected behavioral and emotional effects of grief, loss and drastic life disruption.
Health Care Centers in Schools will implement a drama-based program in Baton Rouge drawing on successful programs implemented in New York after 9/11. The core of the program is to work with teens to write monologues and scenes that explore impact of their experiences, and capture essential elements of their life and identity including culture, history and experiences during and after hurricane Katrina (survival, rescue, separation, loss, relocation), thereby giving them both an outlet for their experiences and opening a community discussion of how to respond to the needs of teens.
