The fires in Southern California, which consumed 810 square miles and destroyed more than 2,000 homes, are now largely contained and the 500,000 people who were evacuated are being allowed to return to their homes. To assist the affected communities, the Union for Reform Judaism has opened a disaster relief fund, which will be used to assist both our local Reform community if needed and to provide general relief for area families and rebuilding efforts. In addition, the Union is accepting donations of gift cards for vendors serving the affected area to provide direct assistance to impacted individuals and families.
The Union has been in touch with the leadership of each congregation in the affected areas. While the synagogue buildings at this point are not affected, many congregational members have been evacuated and it will be some time before the impact of this disaster is truly known.
The Reform Movement has a strong history of generosity when disasters occur, providing necessary funds for natural and man-made crises. The Union does not take any administrative fees for this work; 100% of donations are directed to relief efforts, less any credit card fees charged to the Union.
