FL - Youth Director

Hours: approximately 35 hours/week including weekends and holidays, as required.

Position Summary: Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, a large Reform Congregation in Plantation, FL is seeking a Youth Director. This position is responsible for creating and overseeing and participating in programming and leadership development for our Temple youth in grades 3 through 12. One of the primary functions of our youth director will be to foster social, spiritual, educational and social action programming for Temple children. All youth programming activities should enable children to develop and deepen their connections to Reform Judaism, strengthen Jewish identity and knowledge, and promote a connection to Israel. The Youth Director, under the direct supervision of the Associate Rabbi, will provide a combination of social programming and educational opportunities to enrich Reform Jewish learning for all Temple youth including Katonty (grades 3-5), Misty (grades 6-8) and Kafty (grades 9-12). The ideal candidate will also possess a love of teaching and will be responsible for 8/9th grade religious school classes on Tuesday evenings.

Preferred Experience, Credentials and Skills:

  • Strong Jewish identity and background in youth programming; preferably NFTY (National Federation of Temple Youth)
  • Strong organizational, project management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work with children of all ages.
  • Computer experience including word-processing, database and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously.

    General Duties:

    • Plan and implement programming for children in grades 3 through 12 in collaboration with the Associate Rabbi.
    • Empower youth and teens to create and run programming (with adult supervision) and to become leaders.
    • Regular meetings with the Associate Rabbi, Kafty Executive Board, and Youth Committee.
    • Plan and attend at least one program per month in each of the three youth groups during the school year.
    • Attend weekly staff meetings.
    • Publicize youth offerings with monthly calendar, flyers, emails, temple bulletin, social media, etc.
    • Keep track of Kafty funds, submit receipts for expenses and other administrative aspects of this position.
    • Promote youth participation and attend NFTY Regional events. Promote youth participation with potential attendance at URJ Camps; local, regional and national youth programming and retreats.
    • Maintain relationship with NFTY and foster relationships with other synagogues and youth groups.
    • Oversee major events sponsored by Kafty, including the Purim Carnival, Youth High Holy Day services and other programs. Encourage participation of our youth in the Temple at large.
    • Other duties as requested by the clergy or Executive Director.
