ON - Part-time Youth Advisor

Temple Har Zion, a vibrant and growing congregation, is searching for a high energy, enthusiastic advisor to lead our thriving junior and senior youth groups. The successful candidate will work with our youth, as their mentor; planning, developing and overseeing youth-led programming. This includes social events, and religious, cultural and social action programs. As youth advisor, you will participate in all youth group events locally and regionally, through the Northeastern Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).

Previous experience working with teens in a leadership role, excellent organizational skills, familiarity with social media, and good verbal and written communication skills are required. Knowledge of and a commitment to Reform Judaism are preferred.

The Youth Advisor will, at all times, act as a positive Jewish role model who will provide leadership, guidance and support to THZ's youth group and programs. Major responsibility is to assist in the planning and running of youth activities, encouraging active participation and involvement in the Temple community in ways that are meaningful and fun. Hours of work will vary depending on the activities planned and the time of year. Several weekends of out-of-town travel are required each year (approximately 5-6). Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • guide, facilitate and motivate MHarZY members to develop and run their own social, educational, religious, social action and spiritual activities
  • promote teamwork, teach leadership skills and coach the MHarZY executive members to enhance their ability to carry out their roles
  • coordinate participation in Temple wide events/services
  • meet regularly with the MHarZY members and executive to plan programs and activities
  • attend MHarZY programs to support and facilitate what the youth have planned
  • coordinate with other GTA youth group advisors to plan and help facilitate local youth group activities
  • regionally, MHarZY is a member of NFTY-NEL. This candidate should be familiar with the NFTY philosophy, keep in touch with NFTY Regional Advisor, encourage participation in regional events and travel with the youth group to all of these functions
  • be the first to arrive and last to leave any MHarZY, JHAZY and Club 5/6 related activity and to supervise the safety and well-being of the youth that are present, and the facility being used
  • arrange for additional adult supervision/volunteers as needed
  • maintain the MHarZY membership roster and the list of all teenagers within the congregation
  • insure all THZ high school teens and parents are contacted regularly regarding MHarZY programs
  • oversee and monitor for appropriateness all communications going out from MHarZY, which includes member emails, social media, phone chains, Temple newsletter and e-blast publications
  • plan and schedule all JHAZY programs that will take place throughout the year
  • responsible for all communications going out to JHAZY members and their families
  • plan and schedule all Club 5/6 programs that will take place throughout the year
  • responsible for all communications going out to Club 5/6 members and their families
  • work cooperatively with the office and custodial staff
  • communicate regularly with the Youth Committee (Co)Chair, Executive Liaison and the Rabbi
  • inform Rabbi, Youth Committee (Co)Chair and Executive Liaison of upcoming youth events, status, problems and needs
  • place all youth group events on the Temple calendar and attend yearly calendar meeting or arrange for representation
  • attend Youth Committee meetings and provide a report
  • represent MHarZY, JHAZY and Club 5/6 at Temple Board of Director meetings when possible
  • position reports directly to the Rabbi with regard to programming and to the Executive Director with regard to administrative and financial matters
  • oversee youth group finances in conjunction with the Executive Director, maintain records and keep expenditures within budget
