New York, NY; July 20, 2018 - The statement below is issued by Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, and Rabbi Joshua Weinberg, President of ARZA, the Association of Reform Zionists of America:
We are astonished, angered, and outraged by the interrogation by Israeli police of Rabbi Dov Haiyun yesterday morning. We stand in solidarity with the thousands of protesters who have raised their voices against this attack on religious freedom.
Until this week, it was unthinkable in this day and age that a Rabbi would be interrogated for simply officiating at a wedding. But we seem to be in new, ever more turbulent times.
We continue to support and take great pride that thousands of weddings are performed by Reform and Conservative Rabbis in Israel every year, and we strongly support our colleagues who conduct such ceremonies.
As ardent Zionists we stand with our movement in Israel as it works to wrestle free from the monopoly and tyranny of the ultra-Orthodox Chief Rabbinate. We stand, and will continue to stand, for the values of freedom and equality.
Tomorrow night we commemorate Tishah B’Av and remember the wanton hatred and divisiveness that led to the destruction of the Temple. It is beyond sad that at this moment in time we still contend with such hatred and intolerance, let alone that it comes from Israeli governmental officials.
