A Lasting Legacy: $1 Million Gift Strengthens the Future of the Scheidt Seminar

March 10, 2025

This past weekend, at the 25th anniversary celebration of the URJ Scheidt Seminar for Congregational Presidents, we had the incredible privilege of announcing a $1 million gift from the Scheidt family. The transformational investment ensures that this flagship leadership program will continue shaping and supporting synagogue presidents for years to come.

Since 1998, the URJ Scheidt Seminar has engaged more than 1,700 synagogue presidents, equipping them with the leadership skills, networks, and insights necessary to strengthen their congregations and lead through evolving challenges. The seminar has been described by participants as a defining experience, offering hands-on training, access to top Reform Movement thought leaders, and a powerful peer network that continues long after the program ends.

During the special Havdalah gathering in Dallas, Helen Scheidt spoke on behalf of the Scheidt family, reaffirming their commitment to empowering synagogue leaders and strengthening the Reform Movement. For 25 years, the Scheidt family's generosity has made this program possible, and this latest investment ensures its long-term sustainability and expansion.

In keeping with the values and goals of the Reform Movement, the 2025 seminar is focused on:

  • Strengthening sacred partnerships in congregational leadership
  • Fostering vibrant and inclusive communities
  • Equipping leaders with strategies to navigate change and address today's most pressing Jewish communal issues

This historic gift ensures that future synagogue leaders will continue to benefit from this invaluable program, which has played a crucial role in strengthening congregations across North America.
