URJ Camp Offers Incentive Program for Jewish Military Families

February 27, 2014

The URJ is proud to announce an innovative Camper Incentive Program for Jewish Military Families on Active Duty, open to Jewish families with at least one parent on Active Duty in the United States Armed Forces. The program will be offered at the URJ Henry S. Jacobs Camp in Utica, MS, which has served more than 10,000 Jewish children since 1970. Incentives vary in amount from $250.00 to $3,000 per child, based on the military rank of the parent(s) and the child's age. An individual incentive is available for each child enrolled for camp from participating families. Says URJ's Director of Camp and Israel Programs Paul Reichenbach,

Jacobs Camp offers a unique environment that will resonate strongly with military families. Jacobs Camp is an oasis of Jewish life in the South that helps build Jewish identity and confidence for kids from diverse geographic and socio-economic backgrounds, who all come together to form a close-knit Jewish community at camp.

A Commander in the U.S. Navy shared,

As a military family that moves every three years, often to locations with small Jewish populations, that has not always been easy . . . We wanted to find a Jewish camp with a small town feel- a place where other campers would understand the perspective of being part of a small Jewish community and where our children could express the challenges they face with understanding friends. Jacobs Camp stood out . . . this sense of connectedness and family at Jacobs Camp reminded us of the tight bonds we share with other military families, and made us feel at home.

And from URJ Jacobs Camp Director, Jonathan "J.C." Cohen,

We are thrilled to be able to give back to military families who give so much for our country. We are also grateful to the JWB-Jewish Chaplains Council for their assistance in designing this program. Jacobs Camp is truly a 'Jewish Place at a Southern Pace' and we open our arms and hearts to active military families.
