Communications Director - Temple Emanu-El

Temple Emanu-El, Dallas, a large, vibrant Reform Jewish congregation of over 2600 households, is searching for a Communications Director who will be passionate about our organization and its vision. The successful candidate will provide strategic and proactive leadership in all aspects of our communications and marketing efforts.

We are looking for someone who cares deeply about our organization's vision and will collaborate with a team of professionals and lay leaders to develop a strategic and integrated plan to promote all activities throughout the congregation.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads the development and implementation of all marketing, communications and brand strategies in order to strengthen Temple's engagement with members, the Dallas Jewish community and the broader public.
  • Ensures that organizational vision and values are successfully expressed and integrated across all communications channels and various media.
  • Works with the Communications Associate and Graphic Designer to organize and coordinate all internal and external message projects including print, visual, web-based, and social media. - Coordinates crisis communications for the synagogue. - Interacts with clergy, professional staff, lay leaders and members to ensure consistency in brand, message and appropriate use of all platforms.

Essential Functions:

  1. Partner with clergy, senior staff, and lay leadership to set strategic direction and vision through communications; develop and implement an integrated Temple-wide communications plan and brand strategy to engage current and future congregants and stimulate program attendance.
  2. Oversee the creative and editorial direction, development, and production of all Temple communications (i.e: website, print and online publications; social media; marketing and advertising), including recruitment, retention, and management of outside creative agents as necessary
  3. Provide strategic oversight and support for membership, programming, educational and development materials.
  4. Manage the team that oversees the delivery of a range of print digital and audio services, including: weekly E-blast with news of services and upcoming events, monthly magazine/newsletter with event news and in-depth features about the congregation, technical support and content for websites connected to Temple, development and stewardship of Temple Emanu-El’s social media presence and a podcast, giving the congregation and public a deeper sense of Temple life.
  5. Supervise Communications Associate and Graphic Designer.

Professional Skills/Requirements:

  • Strategic visioning capability for developing and implementing comprehensive communications and marketing plans;
  • Journalism skills, including reporting, writing, editing, story/image coordination, publication design; this position calls for daily writing and use of AP style and accepted style of the Union for Reform Judaism.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that allow for effective two-way communication with clergy, staff, members;
  • Print production skills including advanced pre-press design and production with a working knowledge of Adobe CS and other graphic and text platforms utilized by the department;
  • Supervisory, leadership and team-building skills to work with Communications Associate and other staff;
  • Creative problem-solving and consensus-building skills;
  • Budgeting, purchasing, and vendor management skills;
  • Web design and content management experience
  • Knowledge of, or openness to learning about, Jewish rituals, holidays and practices. This is essential to achieve effective marketing within a Jewish institution.
  • Ability to successfully work on, manage and complete multiple projects at the same time. This person must be able to manage a variety of communications activities, making sure there are procedures and chains of command in place, including but not limited to: live-streaming, digital signage, text messaging, print production, and mailing services.
