Controller

Summary:

The controller supervises the financial operations of Temple Beth Sholom consistent with generally accepted accounting principles, sound internal controls and financial management practices. Works with the Executive Director, rabbis, staff, committees, and leadership in recording financial transactions, reporting financial results, cash management, investments and coordinating the work of external accountants. Responsible for managing and preparing the annual operating budget.  Also, responsible for the accounting and financial reporting of the Temple’s endowment. The controller supervises a general ledger and accounts payable clerk, accounts receivable, a payroll clerk and the school registrar

Minimum Professional Requirements and Skills:

•             Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.

•             Five years of accounting, financial analysis, and reporting experience.

•             Experience supervising financial personnel and managing an accounting department, with an emphasis on team building.

•             Computer and accounting software expertise including Excel, QuickBooks, General Ledger accounting applications and Paychex (familiarity with ShulCloud a plus)

•             Excellent communication skills including writing, oral presentation, and interpersonal skills.

•             Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; ability to manage people, priorities, and workflow.

•             Experience developing and maintaining financial systems, policies, procedures, and controls.

•             Knowledge of employment practices, policies, and payroll processing

•             Strong project management skills.

•             Ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously and manage deadlines

General Duties:

1.            Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures of the organization and ensure timely, accurate reporting of financial information.

•             Ensure a system of internal controls is established to safeguard Temple assets, with assistance from the Executive Director.

•             Support Temple clergy, School and Administrative staff and other department heads in their understanding financial matters.

•             Oversee the Temple’s 403(b) retirement plan working with the outside plan administrator and various Board of Trustee (BOT) committees.

•             Coordinate the annual independent accountant’s report of Temple’s financial operations.

•             Maintain corporate documents and ensure Temple complies with various reporting requirements of local, state and federal agencies.

•             Other duties, functions or research as requested by the Executive Director.

•             Demonstrate a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.

2.            Supervise the daily accounting activities performed by members of the accounting/finance team, including but not limited to:

•             Maintain approximately 1100 family accounts and 500+ students.

•             Manage ShulCloud Financial Reporting and links to QuickBooks

•             Review all checks, American Express and vendor invoices to be paid prior to Executive Director and BOT signatures to ensure accuracy.

•             Work with professional and administrative staff to ensure that they properly submit and support invoices for payment and assign it to their budgeted accounts.

•             Generate quarterly workers' compensation reports.

•             Supervise the collection of accounts receivable by monitoring the accounts receivable aging

•             Reconcile additional accounts and makes transfer requests monthly to Program Initiative, Grants, Discretionary Funds and Foundation

3.            Administer Temple Beth Sholom’s and the Temple’s Endowment investments under the direction of the applicable Finance Committees, Foundation, and Board directives.

•             Prepare financial statements (Balance Sheet, Statement of Income and Cash Flow), with all variances to budget noted, to review with Executive Director, followed by a review with the Budget/Finance Chair and President and Finance Committee

•             Quarterly review all Deferred Revenue accounts and make recommendations to the Executive Director.

•             Initiate and manage the budget process and collaborate with the Executive Director (ED) and Finance Committee to present to BOT for approval.  Provide monthly updates to ED and Finance Committee.

•             Calculate and compare monthly budgets to the approved annual budgets.

•             Proactively maintain highly organized filing system;

•             Assist in the development and implementation of systems and procedures as needed.
