Summary of Duties:

The Executive Director leads and supports the mission and values of Temple Emanu-El; collaborating with the Rabbis, Staff, Board and other lay leaders to establish strategies, goals, and programs for the ongoing successful operation of the congregation. Working under the direct supervision of the Board President and in constant consultation with the Senior Rabbi, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of the congregation’s operations, including direct supervisory responsibility for the office and support staff and all administrative, accounting and maintenance functions, as well as outside contractors. The Executive Director is integral to membership growth and retention and constantly strives to foster feelings of connection among congregants. Required skills include strong leadership, financial acumen, project, and volunteer management. Other important attributes of a successful candidate will include a strong sense of accountability, a collaborative working style, and good oral and written communications.

 

Essential Functions:

Strategy and Goals:

Works with the Senior Rabbi, the Board President and other professionals and lay leaders to identify areas for growth and opportunity. Continually assesses the congregations’ needs and recommends programs, priorities, and necessary changes to strengthen the community

 

Membership Development and Retention:

Has shared responsibility for membership development and retention with other staff and lay leaders. Works with the membership committee and others to serve congregation members and community with the intention that all members feel a strong and welcoming connection to Temple Emanu El.

•  Develops ideas to foster membership growth

•  Oversees the cultivation and recruitment of new members

•   Solicits member participation in congregation activities and fosters volunteer engagement

•  Oversees new member on-boarding and integration to ensure that new members feel immediately welcomed into the congregation

•  Ability to work tactfully with congregants regarding financial responsibilities

•  Acts as a liaison with the membership committee

•   Spends time building and maintaining relationships with members including assisting members to connect with volunteer opportunities. Is responsible in connection with lay leaders for developing and supporting Havurot

 

Human Resource Management:

Provides Human Resource Management for all Temple Emanu El staff

•  Staff liaison to the Personnel Committee

•  Is responsible for hiring, coaching, professional development and performance management of direct reports

•  Reviews and evaluates the organizational structure and processes for efficacy and effectiveness

•  Provides coaching and encourages good and frequent communications among support staff to foster an environment of respect, fairness, employee satisfaction, productivity, and high overall morale. Ensures that staff is focused on current and ongoing priorities and is always dedicated to providing a very high level of customer services to congregants and the community at large

•  Supports the team in keeping the synagogue running smoothly and beautifully - these tasks may vary on a day-to-day basis but will require a team concept and approach

•  Ensures compliance with current California and Federal labor laws, including keeping policies and procedures up to date

 

Development and Fundraising:

Works closely with the Senior Rabbi and lay leadership to provide direction, strategy, and support of development activities to achieve the congregation’s fundraising goals.

•  Supports development activities including annual campaigns, major gifts, special events planned to give a campaign, capital campaigns, and other fundraising opportunities

•  Ensures proper acknowledgment and recognition of donors

•  Identifies and personally cultivates and donors and fundraising sources

 

Operations:

Manages the day-to-day operations of the Temple through support and contract staff

• Responsible for the maintenance of the phone system and various IT hardware/software and all other office equipment

• Manages Temple database software and procedures to ensure accuracy, maximize member retention, and program effectiveness as well as providing the necessary support to staff with database requests and requirements

•  Ensures the ongoing accuracy of the Temple calendar

• Supervises the maintenance/facility staff to ensure that the buildings and grounds are safe, clean, and well maintained

•  Supervises and manages the Security team

•  Manages all third party contracts

 

Financial Management:

Works with the Board President and Treasurer to oversee the congregation’s finances

•  Staff liaison to the Finance Committee

•  Supervises the bookkeeper and ensures the accuracy and timeliness of all bookkeeping functions including but not limited to A/P, A/R, dues, cash flow management and Payroll

•  Ensures all financial controls are followed by all staff

•  Ensures that the financial annual review is completed in a timely manner by the approved CPA

•  Works with the Treasurer to prepare the annual budget and oversees the budget, tracking and making recommendations for changes when necessary

•  Works with bookkeeper to prepare monthly financial statements for review by the finance committee

•  Works with the Finance committee and oversees all cash investments

•  Oversees insurance and risk management

•  Is primarily responsible for member contact regarding all financial commitments

 

Board Support and Development:

Works with the Senior Rabbi and Board President to ensure the Board is properly supported and developed

•  Prepares and distributes materials for Board, Executive Committee and Finance Committee meetings

•  Assists with the assimilation and on-boarding of new board members

•  Identifies and recommends potential board members

•  Assists in the growth of current and future board members by providing tools and skills development opportunities

 

High Holy Days:

In consultation with the Clergy, works with the office staff and other support personnel to ensure the proper coordination of High Holy Day services and activities, including; member communication, preparation of packets, tickets and brochures, use of outside facilities, parking and security.

 

Other Functions:

Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, & Experience:

•  Undergraduate degree or higher

•  A minimum of 3 to 5 years of professional experience and expertise in overseeing a nonprofit or similar organization

•  Passionate and knowledgeable about Jewish culture and traditions

•  Proven ability to build a strong and well-developed team

•  Consistent demonstration of the ability to provide excellent customer service and passion for quality

•  Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituents in a pleasant and professional manner

•  Strong verbal and written communications skills

•  Extensive experience and computer literacy in using office software

•  Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds

•  Valid driver’s license
