Bryn Mawr, PA, October 28, 2013 – Camp Harlam, the Union for Reform Judaism's (URJ) regional overnight camp for the Mid-Atlantic region, announced it will open the Harlam Day Camp beginning in June 2014, at the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy (Barrack) in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
Camp Harlam, which has served more than 750 families, 1,000 children, and 250 staff members each summer at its resident camp in Kunkletown, Pennsylvania, since 1958, was chosen as the first URJ camp to launch a community-focused Reform Movement day camp program in North America because of its strong reputation, leadership and significant reach into the local Philadelphia-area Reform network of families and congregations.
"The URJ's foray into Jewish day camping is a strategic initiative within the Reform Movement's focus on Youth Engagement and the URJ North American Camping Committee's strategic plan," said Director of URJ Camp and Israel Programs Paul Reichenbach, "The entry into the Jewish day camp market is expected to create exciting new opportunities for outreach to young Jewish families and act as a gateway experience into Jewish camp for hundreds of young children."
Harlam Day Camp will be using the Barrack facilities at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia's (Federation) Schwartz Campus, including the school's gymnasium, athletic fields, tennis courts, outdoor recreational space, various classrooms, the performance hall and other areas. Eytan Graubart, Harlam Day Camp's director, said that "The Barrack site is truly a beautiful and expansive asset that is a perfect environment for our program." He added that, "People will walk onto the property this summer to find a fun, safe and secure environment that will quickly become synonymous with what Camp Harlam has offered to its overnight campers for so many years."
Aaron Selkow, Camp Harlam's Director, believes that operating Harlam Day Camp at Barrack emphasizes the value of collaboration and efficiency in the Philadelphia Jewish community. "We think that families will recognize our choice of Barrack's facilities on the Schwartz campus as a commitment to quality and a nod towards the type of collaborative and community-based efforts that our camp and the Reform Movement continue to make a priority."
