URJ Stands with Israel and the Residents of the South

New York, NY; November 13, 2018 - The statement below is issued on behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism by Rabbi Josh Weinberg, URJ Vice President for Israel and Reform Zionism:

The Union for Reform Judaism strongly condemns the recent rocket attacks on Southern Israel and hopes that the vital cease-fire will be maintained. Over 400 rockets have fallen on Israel from Gaza over the last two days as Hamas has continued to invest in the infrastructure of warfare. We stand with Israel during this time and pray for the safety and security of her citizens.

We welcomed Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statement that he is not interested in an escalation of violence. The cabinet’s decision to allow the IDF to respond as deemed necessary is appropriate, and our hope is that Hamas will adhere to the cease-fire, a result of the efforts of Egypt and other negotiators.

We mourn the loss of life that has resulted from these recent attacks and hope that the cease-fire will transform into a longer era of quiet.

About the Union for Reform Judaism
The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) builds community at every level—from the way we collaborate with congregations, organizations, and individuals to how we make connections across North America to advance contemporary and inclusive Jewish life. Providing vision and voice to transform the way people connect to Judaism, we help congregations stay relevant and innovative, motivate more young Jews to embrace Jewish living, agitate for a more progressive society, and foster meaningful connections to Israel.

Founded in 1873, URJ has grown into the largest and most powerful force in North American Jewish life, with nearly 900 member congregations and work that inspires, connects, and educates millions of people. Our legacy, reach, leadership, and vision mean that we can unite thousands of years of tradition with a modern, evolving Judaism to strengthen Jewish communities today and for future generations.
