Temple Administrator

Temple Emeth is a vibrant, Reform congregation located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Led by Rabbi Steven Sirbu and Cantor Ellen Tilem, Temple Emeth is a warm and engaging congregation, and welcoming spiritual home. We offer extensive programming for individuals and families of all ages and are proud of our Religious School and Youth Programs.

Reporting to the Rabbi, and collaborating with the Temple President and Board of Trustees, the Temple Administrator handles all administrative and facility-related matters, with the goal of helping to create and maintain a welcoming environment. This includes responding to inquiries from prospective and current members and managing the Temple database. In conjunction with the Temple volunteer leadership, she/he will also be responsible for overseeing expenditures related to the operation of the Temple office and the physical plant. In addition, the Administrator will supervise the clerical and custodial staff.

Essential Functions

1. Manage the day-to-day operations of the building, including repairs, maintenance, and all facility-related activities.

2. Monitor and maintain adequate office supplies and equipment; schedule and coordinate deliveries and repairs; order supplies, restock supplies; and ensure that the operation, cleanliness and overall integrity of the Temple building are maintained.

3. Serve as Temple liaison with various supply and equipment vendors; handling contracts, invoicing, and payments.

4. Oversee the office staff in the processing of all accounts payables and receivables, receiving and sorting mail, and creating Shabbat and Holiday service pamphlets, as well as update and maintain the Temple’s website homepage, and coordinate email and other correspondence to the congregation. Manage the custodial staff. Serve as primary staff support to the clergy and board, managing calendar function.

5. Maintain and update the Temple’s membership database.

6. Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Rabbi and Temple President.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three to five years of related experience, preferably in a synagogue or non-profit environment.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Experience managing a physical plant, and supervising staff
  • Skilled at managing and manipulating a membership database (e.g., ShulCloud)
  • Knowledge of Reform Judaism rituals and practices
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Office strongly preferred
  • Highly organized and professional; excellent verbal, written and organizational skills, including the ability to improve upon existing processes and systems
  • Strong interpersonal and customer (member) service skills with a poised, and professional nature and the ability to work with a variety of personalities.
  • Detail-oriented and proactive, with the ability to set priorities and perform in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly motivated self-starter with excellent judgment and discretion, resilience, and a high level of independent decision-making
  • Persistent at follow up and follow-through
  • Background check required
