The URJ Biennial is the largest religious conference in North American Jewish life. Thousands of educators, directors, and clergy will join together in Chicago this December to envision, share, and celebrate individual and movement-wide challenges and accomplishments. The success of Biennial largely depends on a group of passionate and smart Reform Jewish college students to serve as Ambassadors! From helping to run registration, checking attendees into learning sessions, organizing program supplies, customer service and more, Biennial Ambassadors are responsible for making this inspiring event come to life. Being a URJ Biennial Ambassador is an exciting opportunity, so read on to see if you’re a good fit for the role.

The URJ Biennial Ambassador program may be for you if:

  • You love the Jewish community. You care about strengthening Reform Judaism. You’re passionate about helping others grow and learn.    
  • You have leadership experience with the Reform Jewish community. You have Jewish programming and community building experience. You are thoughtful, positive, and fun.   
  • You think about the big picture. You communicate well with others. You’re ready to put the team and community before yourself.   

As an Ambassador, a typical day at URJ Biennial may include the following:

  • Helping event participants solve any issues or challenges that come up
  • Helping participants find seats during plenary sessions
  • Supporting logistics to create an epic Shabbat dinner experience
  • Running registration and get all participants their name tags and event info
  • Assisting 5,000+ people in getting to the right program room
  • Smiling and directing people to different locations
  • Supporting this awesome event on about 4-6 hours of sleep per night

You’ll also have a ton of opportunities:

  • An unforgettable weekend experience getting to support the Reform Movement
  • Professional development sessions to grow your networking, customer service, event planning, and Jewish education skills
  • Opportunity to be paired with a URJ staff member who can mentor and guide you during Convention and your future professional journey
  • All flights/trains/buses, hotel, and food for the entire event is covered

Here’s the time commitment:

  • 2, hour-long webinar sessions prior to the event
  • Be available in Chicago, Illinois from Tuesday, December 10th to Sunday, December 15th

Important dates to know:

  • Applications are due by Sunday, September 29th at 11:59 PM EST
  • 20-minute interviews will happen on a rolling basis and completed by Friday, October 18th  
  • 2 professional references due by Friday, October 18th
  • Applicants will be notified on a rolling basis no later than Friday, October 25th  

What you’ll need for your application:

  • Your basic information (name, email, phone, address, etc.)
  • Your full resume 
  • Answers to these short answer questions (250 words max each)
    • Please share your involvement and leadership experiences within the Jewish community, including URJ programs, college organizations, and high school organizations. If you have been a Biennial Ambassador in the past, please indicate so.
    • Why are you interested in participating in the URJ Biennial Ambassador Program? What skills will you contribute to the program? How would you grow and benefit from the program?
  • Two character references who can speak to your ability to succeed as a member of this team. References can be a member of clergy, youth group director, manager/supervisor, professor, and/or coach. The URJ Biennial Ambassador Team will reach out to your references; please ensure you notify your references.
  • After applications close, a member of the selection committee will reach out to you to find a time for a 20-minute interview to get to know you better and hear about your interest in serving on the Leadership Team.

Note: The application must be completed at one time - you will NOT be able to save progress on the application. We recommend working on the components of the application before beginning and completing the application. 



Which URJ staff are we working with?

Evan Traylor, Associate Director for College Engagement, and Kara Hoffman, Assistant Director at URJ 6 Points Creative Arts Academy, will be your primary staff managing the Ambassadors. If selected, you will also work with a variety of other URJ staff and lay leaders at Biennial.

It’s finals time – will I have the chance to work on papers?

Yes, although not too much time. Please consider reaching out to your professors to reschedule final exams or papers. We will work to have some quiet workspace for URJ staff and Ambassadors in the Biennial event space.

Is this a paid opportunity?

This is a volunteer opportunity, however, all transportation, hotel, and food costs will be covered for the entire event.
