Reapportionment

The Supreme Court's ruling upholds the "one man, one vote" principle, and we applaud the courts for the firmness and speed with which they have exercised the mandate given them by the Supreme Court's rulings. To the inexorably growing number of all Americans who, as urban dwellers, have been disenfranchised at the polling booth, the effective implementation of "one man, one vote" is a meaningful extension of full basic democratic rights. A truly proportional distribution of representation in state legislatures will bring far-reaching consequences beneficial to the urban centers of population, and enormous benefits for minority groups in advancing the cause of civil rights, education, housing and other areas of social justice.
THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED that the 48th General Assembly of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations calls upon the Congress of the United States to reject all proposals which would nullify or weaken the "one man, one vote" principle.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we urge all possible speed in implementing equitable reapportionment in the various state legislatures so that the far-reaching rulings of the Supreme Court may become a reality in the life of the American people.
