Upcoming Jews of Color & Jewish Adjacent People of Color Affinity Space Gatherings

Affinity spaces are an important component of the URJ’s REDI work. Racial Equity Tools states, “White people and People of Color each have work to do separately and together. Caucuses [Affinity Spaces] provide spaces for people to work within their own racial/ethnic groups. For white people, a caucus provides time and space to work explicitly and intentionally on understanding white culture and white privilege and to increase one’s critical analysis around these concepts. For People of Color, a caucus is a place to work with their peers on their experiences of internalized racism, for healing and to work on liberation.”

Annabelle Keimech states, “One reason Jewish spaces have remained as primarily white spaces is not because JOCs don’t exist but because they don’t feel welcomed into those spaces. What I have gained from the affinity groups I have been a part of is the agency to make space for myself in Jewish communities, as well as the initiative to make those communities more educated…The Jewish community is becoming increasingly multiracial, and we have to intentionally shift our mindset about what “Jewish” looks like.”

Kelsey Blackwell states: “Valuing and protecting spaces for people of color (PoC) is not just a kind thing that white people can do to help us feel better; supporting these spaces is crucial to the resistance of oppression. When people of color are together, there can be healing. We can reclaim parts of ourselves that have been repressed. We can redefine ourselves and support one another in embracing who we are.”
