January 8, 2026 - We are heartbroken by the shooting death of a civilian, Renee Nicole Good, by an ICE agent in Minnesota. While the facts continue to come out, video suggests the victim did not pose a mortal threat to law enforcement and was simply documenting immigration arrests in her community. So many members of our Reform congregations are similarly showing up in the spirit of our tradition that calls on us to welcome and love the stranger.
Immigration enforcement escalations in Minnesota and other communities nationwide are sowing fear, panic, and death. The Trump administration should cease the escalation immediately, and lawmakers should engage in good faith legislative efforts to reform our broken immigration system. The nation is at a crossroads – let us work together to choose a path that honors our history as a country built and strengthened by immigrants.
