Resolution of Executive Board, June 1937

The following resolution endorsing the Sesqui-Centennial celebration of the adoption of the Constitution of the United States was moved, seconded, and unanimously adopted.

"Whereas, The Congress of the United States has established a Commission known as the 'United States Constitution Sesqui-Centennial Commission' to arrange a fitting nation-wide observance of the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Constitution of the United States, and

"Whereas, the United States Constitution Sesqui-Centennial Commission is authorized to prepare plans and programs for the adequate celebration of the sesqui-centennial anniversary; to give due and proper consideration to any plan or plans which may be submitted to it; and to take such steps as may be necessary in the coordination and correlation of plans prepared by various States Commissions, or by bodies created ubder appointment by the Governors of the respective States, and by representative civic bodies, and

Whereas, The United States Constitution Sesqui-Centennial Commission, desiring the full cooperation of the people of the United States, has extended a most cordial and urgent invitation to our organization to participate in the celebration, therefore be it

Resolved, That the Union of American Hebrew Congregation does hereby endorse the program of observance of the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Constitution of the United States to be observed beginning 1937; accept with appreciation the invitation of the United States Constitution Sesqui-Centennial Commission; appoint a special committee; pledge this organization to extend cooperation to the United States Commission in all possible ways so that our members may acquire a knowledge of the history of the Constitution of the United States; and unite our efforts with those of other organizations for the enlightenment of the whole nation and the stimulation of a patriotic interest in our immortal Document.

Endorsement of Sesqui-Centennial Celebration of the Establishment of the Northwest Territory

The following resolution endorsing the Sesqui-Centennial celebration of the establishment of the Northwest Territory was moved, seconded and unanimously adopted.

"Whereas, During the years 1937-38, the United States Government is sponsoring the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the passage of the Ordinance of 1787 for the establishment of the Northwest Territory which comprised of the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota, and

Whereas, the first Article of the Ordinance of 1787 sets forth in unmistakable terms the American principle of religious liberty, in the words:

"No person, demeaning himself in a peaceable and orderly manner, shall ever be molested on account of his mode of worship or religious sentiments, in the said territory."

Therefore, Be It Resolved, That the Union of American Hebrew Congregations endorse the program of the celebration, and be it further

Resolved, That the Union of American Hebrew Congregations stimulate its affiliated organizations to hold commemorative meetings in the district outlined during the period of the celebration."
