As we stand on the threshold of a new Jewish year, I’m reminded of the millions who sought safety and opportunity on the shores of North America, fleeing tyranny and persecution. Our ancestors found solace in the promise of democracy, where rights were guaranteed and the rule of law protected all – regardless of background or identity.
Yet today, the foundations of our democracies are being tested, and our security and rights feel uncertain.
As we reflect on this past year and look to 5786, we know that a new year of blessings must be built on the firm foundation of a purposeful and proud Judaism.
From the waters of the New York Harbor, with Lady Liberty standing watch, this special Rosh Hashanah message invites you to reflect on the values of Jewish identity, democracy, and our role shaping a more just world in the year ahead.
May you and your loved ones experience peace and wholeness (shalom), justice and equity (tzedek), and belonging and joy (shayachut and simcha) in the coming year, and may we soon see better days for all.
L'Shanah Tovah
